20 METAL BATTLE W:O:A 2018 Fighting for Metal glory At Metal Battle the worlds best newcomers fight each other - musically speaking, of course WACKEN Wacken Heavy Metal is international with the W:O:A Metal Battle bringing the scenes from all over the world together already for the 15th time this year. For some bands like Drone, Torture Squad, Battle Beast or Hammercult this was the important stepping stone into their careers and has accompanied them ever since, says Metal Battle promoter Sascha Jahn about the advantages of the competition. The Battle points to Metal regions in the world that normally wouldnt get much attention. More than 40 nations have already participated and every year a total of 28 contestants come to Wacken and try to get among the top 5. As usual this years bands cover up a wide spectrum of genres from Classic to Death Metal, says Jahn. And we also have a newcomer, Ukraine. At the finals, on Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and to 8 p.m. on W.E.T. Stage and on Headbangers Stage at Bullhead City Circus they can show what Metal means in their countries. This time, says Jahn, apart from Wacken Foundations prize money and non-cash prizes for the top 5 the main winner will receive a very special bonus: a live gig at the ,Full Metal Holiday: Destination Mallorca (14th to 21th October 2018) transfer and all costs included. There they will be joined by Metal Battle 2009 winners Crisix to shake 2000 Metalheads and the club to its very foundations. The TV channel Deutsche Welle will cover the event with a documentary, which will be televised all over the world. To broaden their musical horizon the alternative Metal band Awake Again from Turku released their first recordings via an academic coaching programme in their hometown. FINLAND Nemoreus from Austria (above) use original instruments for their dark sound while Centuries Of Decay (below) bring their progressive Death Metal from the woods of Canada. GEORGIA Every Dog Has Its Day from Tbilisi (formed in 2015) offer a sound with a dynamic mix somewhere between Death-, Math- and Metalcore. INDIA From Hyderabad the five-piece-band Godless brings heavy, raw Thrash influenced Death Metal with New and Old School elements (formed in 2015). The 2018 finalists ARGENTINIA The Groove Me- tal Band Malicious Culebra from Berazategui formed in 2007. They will present a demo and two albums. AUSTRIA Folk-, Black-, Paganand Death Metal are the ingredients of Nemoreuss music (formed in 2016). They combine old instruments like bouzouki or hurdy-gurdy with drums and electric guitars. Behind Bars from Geel/Westerlo (formed in 2015) have released a demo and an EP and deliver an explosive mix of Thrash Metal and Hardcore. BELGIUM CANADA Since 2013 Centuries Of Decay play a Blend of Black and Death Metal elements with progressive and modern influences. Their sound is athmospheric, dynamic and hard. Formed in 2016 Groove Metal band Asylum from Surinam have already recorded four singles. THE CARIBBEAN CHINA Die From Sorrow (formed in 2003 in Beijing) play progressive/melodic Death Metal. They are one of the leading bands in China and have received multiple awards. DENMARK The Young Danish Extreme Metal Band Xenob- Over almost two decades Down for Life (formed in 2000) from Surakarta/Central Java have gained a large fan base, who call themselves The Pigs of Hell. INDONESIA Shiran from Haifa (formed in 2012) is a modern Heavy Metal Band delivering powerful riffs with a wide female vocal range. ISRAEL ITALIA Tarchon Fist from Bo- logna (formed in 2005) mix good old 80s Metal and German Metal to a unique modern Metal blend.
